Caesarean section is a common surgical procedure in the bitch, and the need for knowledge regarding this surgery has become increasingly important. It is important to take into consideration the state of the bitch and puppies, in addition to the numerous physiological changes in the parturient patient. The aims of this review article were to assess available studies on canine caesarean sections and determine the best anaesthetic protocol for this procedure. The search engine PubMed was used for searching literature, and the key words used were ’dog’ + ’caesarean’/’cesarean’ and ’bitch’ + ’caesarean/cesarean’. A total of 22 studies were included. Gas anaesthesia appears to yield good results when used for caesarean sections, and the use of alfaxalone for induction has resulted in higher Apgar scores than propofol. Epidural anaesthesia with or without gas anaesthesia has been associated with positive outcomes for puppy vigour and survival, however, it is also associated with cardiovascular side effects in the bitch. Total intravenous anaesthesia can be used when gas anaesthesia is not available. Alfaxalone is likely preferable to propofol whereas ketamine and barbiturates should probably be avoided. Further studies are needed to investigate the safety of premedication for caesarean section. Opioids are likely a viable option. There have been acceptable results in studies using medetomidine and dexmedetomidine for caesarean sections in the dog, but on the contrary, they have shown poor results in other species. The use of xylazine, benzodiazepines and phenothiazines should probably be avoided.
