Abstract

Decreasing protein is a strategy used to minimize diarrhea in piglets. Its mode of action has been described in the literature, but to date, there has been no quantitative study summarizing the data available on the topic. Thus, a meta-analysis was performed to assess effects of a decrease in protein on the intestinal health of piglets. To this end, a structured search was performed on PubMed. A total of 71 articles were found, of which 23 (published before 2020) were selected. This research was supplemented by a manual search based on Ajinomoto Animal Nutrition Europe database to obtain a total of 26 articles. Growth and intestinal health parameters (fecal score, intestinal morphology, markers of inflammation, bacterial metabolites, intestinal pH, microbiota diversity) were extracted and expressed as a percentage of the control diet. The effect of the decrease in protein was assessed using a general linear model that included the effect of the trial, using MinitabR software. The analysis revealed that the decrease in protein was associated with a decrease in fecal score, pH, ammonia and some biogenic amines (cadaverine, putrescine) in the intestinal contents, in the expression of an inflammatory marker and in crypt depth in the intestine. The intestinal content of short-chain fatty acids, villus height and microbiota diversity remained unchanged. This study confirms allowed to quantify the effect of the decrease in protein on parameters related to gut health. It also confirms that this strategy is associated with a decrease in the risk of diarrhea in piglets, probably due to an improvement in intestinal integrity and inflammatory status.
