Abstract

Antibiotic growth promoter (AGP) has been used in animal production to increase growth and feed conversion efficiency . However, several studies have shown that the main activity of some AGPs can be due to their anti - inflammatory effects leading to decreased muscle c atabolism and prevention of anorexia . So that a lot of energy is stored for muscle development and growth . Although the use of AGP has become common practice in production animals, it s extensive use has contributed to the emergence of antimicrobial resis tance to zoonotic pathogens . One promising strategy is to look for alternatives to AGP, by using herbal medicine as an integrative, complementary and preventive therapy . Java cardamom (Amomum compactum) has been used traditionally in the medical field an d has been researched regarding its anti - inflammatory effect, protective effect on the gastrointestinal tract, and on increasing the digestibility of feed in rumen fermentation . The method used in this research is literature search through data searches on the Pubmed, Sciencedirect, and Google scholar databases in the last 10 years . The results of this literature study discuss the anti - inflammatory role of A . compactum which can be used as an alternative to usi ng AGP . This is related to the decrease in catabolic energy in the acute phase response which causes more energy to be stored for the purpose of muscle development and growth . Further understanding of the mechanism of A . compactum as an alternative to AG P is needed so that an effective alternative to AGP can be produced without promoting antimicrobial resistance .
